Constipation occurs as the result of repeatedly ignoring the urge to move
the bowels.

This is the result of poor levels of mobility.

Spasms of the colon can slow the speed at which the contents move through
the digestive tract, which can lead to constipation.

People can often experience constipation when travelling away from home.
This could be due to a change in lifestyle, schedule, diet and drinking
water.

Pregnancy is also a cause of constipation. The reason may be partly mechanical,
in that the pressure of the heavy womb compresses the intestine, or it
may be due to hormonal changes during pregnancy.
