What we eat affects our overall health and digestive system so it is important
to watch our diet. Natural foods such as fruit and vegetables, and indeed
some pulse and beans remain soft in the digestive system because they
contain fibre that absorbs water. This ensures the food passes along the
digestive system with ease.
Not drinking enough water is one of the major causes of constipation and
health professionals now recognise that adults should drink at lease one
litre of water a day. This may sound a lot but it is quite easy to incorporate
on a daily basis.

Another cause of constipation other than diet is stress. Hectic lifestyles
that involve rushing from one activity to the next can upset the natural
rhythm of the body. So take time out to relax and have a breather.

Many people suppress or ignore the natural need to empty their bowels
and this can cause constipation. If your body urges you to go to the toilet
then you should do so as soon as possible.

Any painful condition, especially of the pelvic region, may inhibit the
urge to go
to the toilet.

Some morphine based painkillers can cause constipation.

Many people find that they suffer constipation whilst on holiday -
a time when their usual routine has been disturbed.
